Not long ago, I was lucky enough to stand by the starting line at Paris-Roubaix. It was a glorious moment for me, having grown up as a fan of watching young men ride around in tight pantaloons. As I stood there, watching professional riders having trouble clipping in, I suddenly realized something...and it wasn't just my fascination with the fact that professionals were fumbling around with their pedals like hapless commuters. It was deeper than that.
As I saw Bradley Wiggins' and his Paul Weller-inspired mullet ride by me (while Whitney Houston's "How Will I Know" played loudly through the ASO's loudspeaker system), I realized that music and cycling don't often mix well. Furthermore, I realized that we should all stop our Caligula-like impulse to take everything we enjoy in at once. Some things, it turns out, are better when kept separate (like human beings and Paul Weller mullets).
As clear and insanely inspired as my realization was that day, I'm aware of the fact that not everyone has reached my level of enlightenment. Such is the life of a trailblazer. Always ahead of the pack, just as I was in the seventh grade, when I wondered why other kids didn't wear gold chains and use massive amounts of cologne. Their loss. At any rate, today I want to share with you two videos that combine music and cycling, in order to show you exactly what I realized that fateful day at Paris-Roubaix.
First up we have Green Edge singing their official team anthem, a cover of Tom Petty's "Won't Back Down", featuring back-up vocals by the riders, which were recorded in a fun "We Are The World"-like studio environment.
Next up we have the official anthem of the Vuelta A Chile, which just took place (oddly enough) in Chile a few weeks ago. This song serves as further proof of the differences that exist between us Latin-American folk and the rest of the world. Luckily, it also shows that people all around the world share the ability to make bad decisions, which lead to recording songs about cycling. (Link courtesy of my brother).
Lastly, here are two more videos which I've posted before. The first is the anthem for the Willems-Accent cycling team (not to be confused with the Wilson Phillips cycling team), a song that largely deals with the subject of the riders being clean, clever and competitive.
And in closing, a miraculous video from the 7-Eleven team about the seldom-discussed topic of hammering it out.
i wish everyone could understand the words to the HORRIBLE Vuelta a Chile song. It's called "Pedalea", which means "pedal on." But the words are SO BAD... it actually says something about getting your gramma and your uncle out to see the race. ugh.
ReplyDelete"Hammering It Out" sounds a lot like my sexual life, "Clean Clever and Competitive" no so much. Can we get Paul Weller to cover "CCC"?
ReplyDeletehammer it out....indeed! that pedalphelic music really turns my crank. a primo find luche.
ReplyDeleteso has any biker gang, er peloton, 'danced' along to Anthrax, or better yet, Leño's Este Madrid or El Tren?
Thanks for those Klaus. Having sated my curiosity I'm now relaxed in the knowledge that I never need to listen to those songs ever again. They remind me that up until recently there was a tradition here in the UK for football (soccer) teams to record songs to commemorate reaching the FA Cup final or to celebrate the national teams heading off to the World Cup. The songs were universally awful and I've just realised that the genre is almost extinct - mercifully. On the plus side, after that performance the Green Edge team's season can only get better! :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to go to bat for Wiggo's mullet. The Jam were definite trend setters and not many can pull off that style.
ReplyDeleteSteve,
ReplyDeleteYou're on to something. If you purposefully start the season badly with a horrible song, things can only improve.
As for football/soccer songs, american football teams also made terrible songs in the 80s when the made it to the Superbowl. Most of them were of the bad hip-hop variety.
Shit! American football songs! I can only imagine how terrible that was! Although the John Barnes rap is the apogee of terrible rap.
ReplyDeleteCome on Klaus, you've got to be based in the UK, no one else even knows who Weller is. Everybody knows your huge staff are mostly Polish, how else can you turn out this high quality prose in such a timely manner?
I so wish I could understand those amazing lyrics! I can only say cervesa in Spanish and I dont even like beer!
Bod, you don't like BEER?! wow. now i've heard it all...
ReplyDeleteoh, and on the topic of football (soccer) teams making fools out of themselves: like anyone needs ANY more reasons to hate (and make fun of) ManU, check out this nugget: http://youtu.be/EAxYs-1y2co
I cannot believe you failed to post Paul Weller's cycling video. That's like blowing off the finishing sprint.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing you've posted it before, but still...
db,
ReplyDeleteI actually hadn't seen that video before, pretty damn great. Will have to share it in a future post.
